The two-seat, front-engine, rear-drive P1800E is one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Period. And here is your chance to own one – if you have a load of cash burning a hole in your wallet, because this Volvo won’t come cheap.

Set to be auctioned at Bonhams’ London Olympia in December, the timeless 1972 P1800E could fetch anywhere between Dh150,000 to Dh250,000 when it goes under the hammer. The model, which was first introduced in 1960, remained in production for 12 years and in that time it created a huge following mostly due to its handsome Fifties jet-age styling. It grew in popularity when it was featured in the hit television series The Saint.

During the production run, 40,000 units were built in coupe form while another 8,000 were estates. You’d be hard pressed to find one today as they’re very rare which is why this particular example could cost a pretty penny when it hits the block. Finished in yellow paint with chrome trim and two-tone black wheels with silver accents, this P1800E – chassis number 184352U – would definitely be a valued addition for a car collector but we wish whoever gets lucky and takes this one home doesn’t turn it into a garage queen. With a B20E four-cylinder engine under the bonnet making 130 horses back in the day (it could hit 0-100kph in 9.5 seconds and had a top speed of 189kph) whoever snaps up this beauty would really score points for restoring and then driving it. The “E” trim variant packed disc brakes and a more upmarket interior and you just don’t see many of these Swedish-built cars on the road today.

Let’s hope the buyer of this one changes that.
