With the new Ford GT having been revealed and sold to a select few customers, interest for the previous iteration of the GT has shot up. Naturally then, any of these that go on auction is sure to be snapped up for a princely sum. Then imagine the interest generated by an example owned by a celebrity. So, if you would like to buy this 2005 Ford GT first owned by Formula 1 champion Jenson Button, expect to face some intense bidding activity.

Set to go under the hammer at the Race Retro Classic Car Sale by Silverstone Auctions at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, England on February 25 and 26, the car is one of five models marked ‘VIP’ by the Ford National Sales Company and is one of only 101 earmarked for Europe. This particular car was allocated to Jenson Button in May 2005 by Ford of Britain registered in the UK in 2006.

“The Ford GT is part of a rare class of modern cars that instantly become collectable, and have become more and more sought after,” says Will Smith, sales manager, Silverstone Auctions. “Given its inimitable heritage, prolific performance, stunning design, and thrilling driving experience, the Ford GT is a very special creation that will undoubtedly be revered for many years to come. In addition, it was once Jenson Button’s very own, adding even more exciting provenance and collectability to this particular example.”

Powered by a mid-mounted, hand-built, supercharged quad-cam V8 engine that made 550bhp and was mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, the Ford GT features racing-derived suspension and brakes. It boasts performance figures that will give even supercars of today a run for their money. If you fancy getting your hands on it, keep a couple of million dirhams ready, as the pre-auction estimate itself is  between £250,000 (Dh1.15million) and £300,000 (Dh1.38 million).
