For most of us, any BMW from the current range (and older...) without any superior features would make us very happy as they’re all pretty darn special. But, some markets get models that are, er, more special. For instance, the Japanese market recently got the fabulous 7-Series Rose Quartz edition and now, to help mark the brand’s 100th anniversary, they’ve got another; the 6 Series Gran Coupe “Exclusive Sport” Celebration Edition. This makes it the twelfth Japanese special edition for the jubilee.

Just 33 units are to be built and yep, they’re all for the land of the rising sun. We know, not fair! The 640i – which is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six making 320 horsepower and 450Nm of torque and comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission - will be adorned with a bunch of features that you usually have to tick on the spec sheet. Exclusively painted Sapphire Black Metallic and riding on a set of 20in M alloys, the Gran Coupe has been fitted with the optional M Sport package. But aside from the new front and rear aprons that that gets you, the Celebration Edition Exclusive Sport has a few more goodies thrown in, such as a high-quality Nappa leather interior (with cognac and black elements along with contrast stitching), Alcantara roof lining, piano black trim and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system with two subwoofers. The comfort package has also been thrown into the mix so that means it gets rear-seat heating, soft-close doors and four-zone automatic air conditioning while some of the other goodies include Parking Assist and dynamic dampers but, if you did happen to go crazy with the spec sheet, you could have all these add-ons. So, there isn’t really much special about this special edition but we wouldn’t complain if we ever had one, even if there isn't a ‘Montblanc for BMW’ fountain pen with each car...
