Things haven’t been looking good for Tesla of late. If the crashes involving its autonomous cars weren’t bad enough, Elon Musk’s high-profile brand now has another headache to deal with. No, it’s not Porsche’s upcoming electric sports saloon, nor is it Volvo or Mercedes with their electric dreams. It’s something more pertinent, more real. It’s this stunning new electric concept from Jaguar. Dubbed the I-Pace, the concept, according to the Coventry carmaker, brings together supercar looks, sportscar performance and SUV space in one electric package. And with a confirmed launch in 2018, it’s evidently aimed straight at the Tesla Model X’s throat.
Built around a bespoke electric architecture, and clothed in a magnificent body, the five-seater I-Pace will be powered by two electric motors and a 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which together will send 400 horses and a whopping 700Nm of torque, the same as that of an F-Type SVR, to all four wheels. These should be enough to propel the electric SUV to 100kph from nought in just over 4.0 seconds. Jaguar says charging from a 50kW DC charging network will take just over two hours, leaving enough charge in the batteries for a range of more than 500 kilometres.
“This is an uncompromised electric vehicle designed from a clean sheet of paper,” says Dr Wolfgang Ziebart, head of technical development at Jaguar Land Rover. “We’ve developed a new architecture and selected only the best technology available. The I-Pace Concept fully exploits the potential EVs can offer in space utilisation, driving pleasure and performance,” he adds.
Jaguar confirms that the production I-Pace will be on the road in 2018, with an official reveal of the car set to happen sometime next year. Registration is already open for those who are looking to buy the I-Pace. All you need to do is go jaguar.com and click the ‘I want one’ button. Well, also make sure you save up enough money by 2018. It’s not going to be cheap.
