If you felt that the all-new Volvo S90 and V90 twins would be better off with a bit more oomph, well Polestar has given the pair just that.

The Volvo tuning arm’s Performance Optimisation package for Gothenburg’s latest saloon and estate has been unveiled and promises to make the two models “more dynamic and fun to drive.” We wouldn’t bet against that; we’ve driven the S60 Polestar – its first dedicated performance offering – and thought that it was very good indeed. And this isn’t some Sharjah backstreet garage botch-job; all changes are made with certified emissions, fuel consumption, service intervals and don’t affect Volvo warranties.

The new pack doesn’t just improve engine performance; it will also improve the duos throttle response (and off-throttle response) and transmission shift speed and precision. The philosophy behind the new optimisation comes from the engineers and racing drivers of Polestar Cyan Racing. We imagine it’d be quite a lot of fun to drive these cars which feature the same technology as the racing cars. The first upgrade package will be available for the turbodiesel D5 in September and then the T6 petrol variants in October but Volvo has not mentioned any power figures. As of now, the most potent S90 and V90 feature the T8 turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor making a total output of 410 horsepower. But, if we are to believe the latest rumours, we can expect Polestar to tweak the flagships in the near future to the tune of 600 horsepower – and that too using the same hybrid motor. Wonder what the Mercedes-AMG E63 and BMW M5 will think about that…

“We continue our work to enhance the performance of the new and class-leading platform of Volvo Cars,” said Niels Möller, COO of Polestar, the Volvo Cars Performance Brand. “The S90 and V90 are cars that take the next step forward for premium performance and we are delighted to take that even further with the Polestar Performance Optimisation,” he added.
