The Eclipse name used to belong to the popular sportscar which was axed back in 2012 after four generations, but now Mitsubishi has confirmed earlier rumours that it will use it for its new soft roader and we’ve just gotten hold of the latest bunch of teaser images from Mitsubishi of the upcoming Eclipse Cross. Hmm, it’s a sad state of affairs; if you hoped this would be another two-door coupé, you couldn’t be further from the truth…

Mitsubishi feels the Eclipse name fits its new SUV because of its coupé-like shape and says it will be sporty to drive. The newbie will be offered with a 1.5-litre turbo four-pot with four wheel-drive. Mitsubishi will debut the all-new Eclipse Cross at the 2017 Geneva motor show next month but we’re sure enthusiasts won’t be happy with the carmaker using the once mighty name for what is essentially just a grocery getter…
