Although a pale shadow of the great Morris Garages of yore, the Chinese-owned MG Motor has been doing a few things right in its bid to revive its fortunes. One such is the GS SUV that we drove late last year in Dubai and found to be a great value for money option in that segment. This week, the British brand did one better by announcing an all-new electric supercar concept at the Shanghai International Automotive Show. Called the MG E-motion, MG claims this model will “push the boundaries of innovation and technology.” That is, if it makes it to production in the coming years.

But if what we see here actually translates unchanged into a production vehicle, we would like to get behind its wheel. Although it seems to have taken styling inspiration from certain models from Jaguar and Mazda, it has all come together rather nicely in this concept. MG says the concept previews the brand’s future styling language, which bodes well for upcoming models. The sportsback-style profile with the sloping roof, the stylish front grille and headlights, and the vertical taillights all look great.

The MG E-motion is built on a pure-electric modular architecture platform developed in-house by MG, but despite boasting a range of more than 500km, it’s apparently capable of doing the benchmark 0-100kph sprint in less than four seconds. It also comes equipped with all the modern connectivity and infotainment features you’d expect in today’s cars.

“The MG E-motion electric supercar concept demonstrates our global vision for the future,” says Matthew Cheyne, head of sales and marketing at MG Motor UK. “Alongside leading the way in design and capability, the next-generation model is the latest step in achieving the ultimate driving experience,” he adds.
