2017 Frankfurt motor show: Mercedes-AMG Project One

With over 1,000 horses and top speed of 350kph, it’s a Formula 1 car for the road…

The awesome Mercedes-AMG Project One hypercar revealed at the Frankfurt motor show could well be the toast of the town – and not least because it has over 1,000 horses and a top speed of 350kph.

The two-seater, billed as a ‘supersports show car’, brings Formula 1 hybrid technology to the road. It features a heavily reworked 1.6-litre V6 hybrid petrol motor which has been taken from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 racing car driven by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas and has multiple electric motors and a very high-tech turbocharger bolted on for good measure. Oh, and it can rev to 11,000rpm! One of the electric motors has a very specific job and that is to reduce turbo lag while two others drive each of the front wheels. The hypercar can also be driven in full EV mode for 25km totally emissions free.

It has an AMG Speedshift eight-speed automated manual transmission and Merc says that the Project One can go from 0-200kph in under six seconds. The Chiron can only do it in 6.5 seconds. Poor Bugatti…

It packs carbon brakes which can utilise 80 per cent of the force to regenerate the 100kg lithium-ion battery which has been placed low down within the carbon fibre body structure. Speaking of the body, it’s absolutely beautiful and is clearly influenced by its sporting roots. For instance, the bonnet features a three tiered scoop, while the front bumper has two huge air inlets. The thin LED headlights give the Merc an aggressive look while around the back you’ll notice that massive spoiler and the fact that the exhaust has been positioned in the middle and is flanked by two diffusers. It rides on bespoke 10-spoke forged aluminium wheels while the cabin is rather spartan getting a Formula 1 style steering wheel, two screens and er, that’s about all! But, it’s enough for Merc to slap a price of Dh9.9 million on it and if you want one, you better be quick – just 275 are being built. But if there’s any truth to the current rumours, then sorry, you’re already too late – they’ve all been sold…
