Just making its premiere at the Frankfurt motor show, the 2018 Renault Sport Megane is the first hot hatchback on the market to feature the type of tech you’d normally find on Porsche 911 GT3s and Bentley Continental GTs: rear-wheel steering.

The French call the tech 4Control four-wheel steering, and it features in the 2018 model song with a new 1.8-litre turbo engine making 280 horsepower and 390Nm of torque. Renault Sport isn’t saying how fast the car is, but expect 0-100km/h in the five, six-second mark.

For the new model customers will be able to choose between a six-speed manual transmission and a six-speed double-clutch ‘box with paddle shifters behind the wheel and launch control. As us customary with Renault Sport, the 2018 comes in a choice of Sport and Cup chassis with the former being the standard option, and the latter getting a limited slip differential.

Later in 2018, Renault Sport is also planning to launch the Megane Trophy model serving up 300bhp and 400Nm of torque and going up agains the Honda Civic Type R and Ford Focus RS.
