It was just a couple of weeks ago that we drove the Aston Martin DB11 V8 in Spain. Now, the British supercar maker has revealed an elegant convertible variant, the DB11 Volante. While the all-new DB11 that was launched in coupe form last year has a screaming, naturally aspirated V12 under its bonnet, the open-top version of the gorgeous GT gets the same 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that we sampled recently.

The AMG-sourced V8 will be the only powertrain available in the convertible, and will make 503bhp and 695Nm, and will take the Volante from 0-100kph in just 4.1 seconds. Built around the same bonded aluminium structure as the DB11 coupe’s the convertible 26kg lighter and 5 per cent stiffer than the model it replaces. “For many of our customers, indeed many generations of Aston Martin customer, the Volante has always offered something very special: a unique combination of elegant style, innate sporting ability and sensory engagement that lifts it above other open-top cars,” says Andy Palmer, Aston Martin president and Chief Executive Officer. “The new DB11 Volante captures those qualities perfectly and promises the kind of pleasure and enjoyment that can only come from driving an open-top Aston Martin,” he adds.

The DB11 Volante shares its gracefully flowing lines with the coupe’s, with the retractable fabric roof being its distinctive feature. Aston says the roof, which has eight layers to it, will keep the occupants well insulated from weather and wind noise. The top, which can be operated remotely using the key, takes just 14 seconds to lower and 16 seconds to close back up. It can also be operated at speeds of up to 50kph with crosswinds of up to 50kph. The engineers have subjected the roof to more than 100,000 cycles in special weather chambers designed to simulate the harshest environments, apart from real world testing of prototypes in Death Valley and the Arctic Circle.

Worldwide deliveries of the DB11 Volante are set to begin during the first quarter of 2018 with prices starting from £159,900 (Dh781,000) in the UK. Aston Martin has confirmed that the Volante will reach our shore by the second quarter of next year.
