We had to do a double take with the calendar because once the news of Honda’s new Civic Type R pickup truck landed in the wheels inbox we were sure it was April 1.

Honda however is dead serious, with the company’s UK team behind the British Touring Car Championship entry creating one of the coolest shop trucks of all time, a one-of-one pickup truck that’s destined for some pretty swift deliveries in its time.

“There are no plans to put this in to production,” said Phil Webb, head of cars at Honda UK, “But we will be using it to transport our lawn and garden products as and when required.” We hope those garden gnomes don’t get motion sickness.

Codenamed Project P, this unique Civic Type R pickup is entirely redone from the B-pillar back, in order to accommodate the new loading area where the rear seats and the boot used to be. Engineers even managed to keep the car’s trademark giant rear wing, making it moveable to allow easy access into the pickup bed. Otherwise the pick Type R is the same as a stock car underneath, using a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-pot to deliver over 300 horsepower and 400Nm of torque.

In fact Honda is so pleased with the Civic Type R they’re even considering giving the new shop truck some recreational time off for a frolic in the Eiffel mountains. “This project was a fantastic opportunity for the team to show just what their creative minds could do,” said project leader Alyn James. “The passion that our engineers have for Honda is shown in our latest creation and we are even considering taking it to the Nürburgring to see if we can take the record for the fastest front-wheel drive pickup truck…”

Considering the production Civic Type R lapped the ‘Ring in 7 minutes and 43.8 seconds last year, we have no doubt Project P would succeed should Honda give the record run a go.
