The laws here have always been strict on modified vehicles and if you added a turbo, larger exhaust, changed the appearance of it etc, chances are your ride would fail its annual registration test. But now, enthusiasts can tinker with their cars and have them passed - if they’re done to the standards of the UAE’s regulations - following the launch of the first vehicle modification inspection centre in Abu Dhabi.

Established by Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management (ADMM) the centre, at Yas Marina Circuit, will check vehicles that have been modified and make sure they are safe for public roads following the implementation of UAE Cabinet decision No. 45 of 2016, in regards to the safety requirements of modified vehicles. The decision was passed by Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), Conformity Affairs Department and in cooperation with the Automobile and Touring Club of the UAE (ATCUAE). Inspections will not just be for cars but for all types of modified vehicles, which following a thorough examination, will receive an official certificate that states their roadworthiness. The centre will send their inspection results to ESMA who will then issue a certificate to the owner of the vehicle.

“This is a very welcome addition to the already wide portfolio of services that we offer drivers and the public,” said Al Tareq Al Ameri, CEO, Yas Marina Circuit. “We welcome a wide range of modified vehicles to our popular Yas Super Street Challenge and Freestyle Drifting events, and now drivers of these specialist vehicles can enhance safety even further thanks to the new inspection centre.”
