The Cadillac ATS-V Coupé is one of the most entertaining cars out there, it’s blessed with a fabulous drivetrain and looks great especially if you opt for the Carbon Black package which adds a prominent front splitter, bonnet vent trim, rear diffuser and a taller body-colour rear spoiler. But even with a raspy exhaust note and potent twin turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 that makes 464 horses and 603Nm of torque mated to a snappy eight-speed automatic it’s still not quite good enough to scoop our award — and nor is the Infiniti Q60S Coupé. The Infiniti, powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6, makes a healthy 400 horsepower and 475Nm of torque but it suffers a tad from turbo lag which detracts from the drive — but the chassis makes up for that; the double-wishbone front and a multilink rear axle suspension and adaptive dampers keep it planted. Like the Cadillac, it also has an attractive exterior and has some useful tech and safety features such as Forward Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection and Adaptive Lighting — but neither can hold a candle to our winner, the rip-roaring RS 5.

It used to have a naturally aspirated V8 which we loved but has downsized to a V6 but this hasn’t hurt the Audi one little bit. It’s still an absolute blast to drive and as thrilling as ever. In fact, it still has the same 450 horse output of the old 4.2-litre but makes it with a much smaller all-new 2.9-litre TFSI. However, it boasts 170Nm of torque more than the V8 for a total of 600. The Cadillac has a touch more oomph but it also weighs considerably more than the Audi. At 1,655kg, the RS 5 is nearly 100kg lighter than the ATS-V Coupé and it handles far better than it. It guarantees a sporty ride thanks to the new chassis (five-link arrangement at the front and back paired with adaptive dampers) and is far more agile. And all four wheels dig in for traction which gives you the confidence to push it that bit harder in the corners. Throw in a lovely interior (black Fine Nappa leather seats, ambient LED lighting, and Audi’s fab MMI infotainment system with an 8.3in display, sat nav, DVD player, 10GB hard drive storage) and it ticks all the right boxes and deserves our coveted award.
