Spy shots of the upcoming third-generation BMW X3 have been doing the rounds of late. This week, we have received the clearest images yet, revealing more details of the exterior than ever before. The current X3 is one of our favourite crossovers as far as the driving experience is concerned, so this is one utility vehicle that we’re actually looking forward to getting our hands on.

The next-gen X3, known by the codename G01, will be built on the same CLAR modular platform that debuted in the 7 Series and later was used in the 5 Series. This means the new X3 will be lighter than its predecessor, and hence more efficient. This will also have a positive bearing on its performance, which is already impressive for a utility vehicle.

Powertrain options are likely to be the same six- and four-cylinder units found in the new 3 Series. As you can see from the shots here, the test car seems to sport M Performance bits, like a blacked-out kidney grille, the twin-exit exhaust pipes, rear spoiler and beefier bumpers. And since a proper M version has already been spotted, there’s no doubt going to be enough performance variants too.
