This week, our spy snapper spotted the Lamborghini Urus SUV being tested around the Nürburgring. Although wearing heavy camouflage, the prototype’s outlines are apparent and it looks very similar to the concept revealed at the 2012 Beijing motor show.

While it will be based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform that also underpins SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and the Bentley Bentayga, the Urus is expected to see more carbon fibre used in its construction than its cousins to extract the kind of performance that customers would expect of a Lamborghini vehicle. Although the concept SUV featured a V12 engine, the production vehicle will be powered by a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, which will be massaged to churn out nearly 650 horsepower. This is significant as it makes the Urus the brand’s first vehicle to get a turbocharged powertrain. A plug-in hybrid model is also reported to be on the cards. Keep an eye on this space for more updates as they come in.
