We are big fans of German tuner G-Power because while other aftermarket firms work on a car, they tend to focus too much on the way it looks rather than how it drives. Not these guys. Their priority is to improve performance - but you might have thought it was not possible to get any more power out of the already mighty Mercedes-AMG G63. Well, you’d be wrong.

Although the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 already makes a very healthy 571 horses (some say that is too much for a 40-year old military off-roader…) G-Power sure has upped the ante. It has added a Bri-Tronik 5 V1 ‘power module’ which plugs into the ECU and then modifies the data sent to it from various sensors in the engine and transmission. The module does its little bit by jacking up the power. How much power? 74 horses and 140Nm of torque making for a total of 645 horsepower and 900Nm of torque respectively. This helps the big Merc hit 100kph from rest in just 5.3 seconds and the module also increases top speed to 250kph. But if say the engine was to start to overheat, then the module automatically shuts down. Indeed, all of the engine’s standard safety protocols remain in place.

So, that is the power part taken care of, what about the looks? Well, G-Power of course doesn’t just tune engines – they know how to dress up cars too but the tuner has not gone OTT in messing with the G63’s rugged appearance. All it has done is add a new set of 23in Hurricane RR wheels for the G-Wagen made from aircraft-grade aluminium. It is a subtle touch but it works well with the bright yellow paint and the chrome grille. Hmm should Bumblebee be a Camaro or this?
