In terms of popularity, not many TV shows can match the heights scaled by Magnum P.I. in the Eighties. The character of Thomas Magnum played by Tom Selleck, and his splendid Ferrari 308 GT captivated audiences young and old alike for almost a decade. If you belong to the generation that grew up watching Magnum P.I. and envying the private detective for getting to drive the gorgeous Ferrari, here’s your chance to own the very same 1984 308 GTS Quattrovalvole that co-starred with Tom Selleck. Auction house Bonhams is putting the car, which is one of just five used throughout the series, under the block as part of its Scottsdale sale that starts on January 19.

Used during the 1984 – 1985 season of the show, this particular car is believed to have been used for light action and static close-up scenes. This means, even after having two owners in the years since, the 308 GTS still has only 36,000 miles (less than 58,000km) on the odo. Once it was done with the shooting, Ferrari North America took possession of the car, refurbished it and sold it to the first owner as a demo car in 1988, who in turn sold it to the current owner a year later. Bonhams says the car has since been maintained “fastidiously” and “with no regard for cost.” That explains why the original Rossa Corsa paintwork still looks fresh. Also, the original leather interior has been re-dyed in the accurate shade of tan, and the stock exhaust has been replaced with a Tubi unit.

The claims of regular maintenance suggests that the original 3.0-litre V8 that’s good for 232 horsepower and the five-speed manual gearbox are also in good shape. Also included in the sale is a full history file that contains the warranty book, and service receipts dating back to 1986, as well as a letter from Ferrari North America certifying that this car was actually driven by Tom Selleck in the 1984-1985 shooting season of Magnum P.I. While the average price for a 308 GTS in good condition is between Dh300,000 and Dh400,000, this car’s association with the iconic TV series is sure to drive up the price significantly. But if you’re a fan, and have that kind of money to spare, this is a once in a lifetime chance. And if you happen to be a Miami Vice fan, then this Testarossa put up for sale by Barrett Jackson will be right up your alley.
