Owning any Ferrari would be a magical thing - unless it’s the Mondial 8 which was ugly (if Al Pacino’s character wasn’t blind in Scent of a Woman he wouldn’t have wanted to drive the hideous Fezza…) but if you had the chance to own the awesome F40, you’d jump at the chance – if you had a lot of dosh of course. Well, one has come up for sale – but it isn’t just any old F40. No, this one only used to belong to rock and roll legend, Eric Clapton!

Eric, whose Ferrari back catalogue includes a 250 GT Lusso, a 275 GTS and the one-off SP12 EC, caught the Ferrari bug from another music legend, the late great George Harrison. The story goes that his close pal George pulled up at Eric’s house in a blue 356 GTC. Eric fell head over heels for the car and even though he couldn’t drive at the time, he decided he wanted one. In fact, he learned to drive in his very own 356 GTC and has since owned countless other models from Maranello.

The F40, which was the highlight at the 1987 Frankfurt motor show, was bought by Eric in 2000 and he kept the car for three years before selling it to the current owner. Chassis number 90645 is powered by a twin-turbocharged 2.9-litre V8 making 478 horses and can do 0-100kph in 4.1 seconds.

Now, it is for sale at luxury motorcar specialists GVE London with a price tag of £925,000 (roughly Dh4million) but if the F40 is not for you, don’t worry – perhaps the 308 GTS from Magnum P.I. or the Testarossa from Miami Vice is more your style…
