Those old Tonka trucks were near indestructible and we spent many hours in our youth launching them out of our bedroom windows onto the driveway below and nope, not even the wheels would fall off. They were brilliant fun and now we can relive those days with a real life Tonka toy!
Toyota Australia's 150-strong product planning and development division teamed up with Tonka and conceived, designed, assembled and tested this Hilux Tonka concept – which is replete with the familiar black and yellow livery just like the toys. Powered by a 2.8-litre turbodiesel with all-wheel drive (it has massive 35in tyres) and a whopping 150mm of ground clearance (it sits on high-riding axles) and has a heavy-duty suspension, this looks like a lot of fun. It also has a new front bar and a bonnet with a carbon-fibre skin and air scoops while high-performance LED lighting (in the bar and roof pod) should really help to illuminate all those trails and rough roads when you venture off the beaten track. Around the back it gets a new tailgate which incorporates a spoiler. We’d love to get wild with this full-size dream toy for adults and rekindle all of those childhood memories!
“We have taken Tonka out of the sand pit and reinvented HiLux from top to bottom and from nose to tail,” said roduct design chief Nicolas Hogios. “Inspired by the Tonka trucks that kids play with in their backyards, the Hilux Tonka Concept goes way beyond the already hugely capable abilities of Hilux to traverse rocks and other rugged terrain.”
