Smart has announced some updates for the ForTwo and at the top of the list is a new black-fabric roof. Yes, we also thought this style had gone out of fashion decades ago but it seems Smart is keen to bring it back.

The new roof will be standard equipment for the coupe (and it will no doubt blur the boundaries between it and the convertible…) and if Brabus owners feel as if they are missing out, well there’s good news for them as the fabric roof will be a no-cost option. But, it will replace the panoramic glass roof. And just in case there’s any confusion, this isn't a cabriolet or a soft targa – it is just a hard top covered in cloth – which incidentally can be ordered in black, brown or light beige. We only have a single image to go by and can’t really tell how it will look but since the car is rather interesting in itself, the new roof could go down quite well. Even if this fashion went away after the Seventies, but you can never keep a good thing down as they say. The other updates for the ForTwo include new LED lighting (and front fog lights with cornering light), a new child seat fastening system which Smart says is a “further development of the ISOFIX system” and a number of new colours (including metallic cadmium red) and wheel options. There’s also a name change; the Sports Package (it has 16in eight-spoke Y-design alloys finished in black, 10mm lowered sports suspension, chrome exhaust tips, three-spoke multi-function sports steering wheel and sports pedals in brushed stainless steel) is now called Sleek Style and the reason for the change was so that it could be further distinguished from the Brabus Sports package.

Smart is opening the order books for the new 2016 lineup with the new-look models hitting dealerships by September.
