Steve McQueen was the 'King of Cool' and loved by millions all over the world; he was a great actor and massive petrol head. He loved to go fast and lived his life in the same vein. In fact, when he wasn’t in front of the camera, he would participate in a host of professional racing events. And, when he was in front of the camera, he would often perform his own stunts, such was his skill behind the wheel. He also had a massive collection of cars but although this Porsche 911 wasn’t one of his, it was however built by Canadian tuner Bisimoto Engineering and inspired by the late actor and is a rolling tribute. And, it will be crossing the block at Mecum’s Monterey sale next month with the proceeds going to the Boys Republic charity.

The 1980 model has been designed to look like a late Sixties car that McQueen raced himself. Finished in a Slate Grey paint (which was the same colour as his 911T in the opening sequence of Le Mans) and riding on a set of matte-white alloy wheels, it’s powered by a 3.6-litre air-cooled flat-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission making around 316 horses. It features sequential fuel injection, a GT3 intake manifold and a custom exhaust system. The suspension has been tweaked; out goes the rear torsion bar for a custom coilover set-up. The cabin gets a four-point rollcage, aircraft-style bare aluminium seats and a Momo Prototipo steering wheel which was McQueen’s favourite.  It also has a plate of authenticity fixed to the dash which reads, “Project 911 BR 1 of 1. Commissioned in Honor of Steve McQueen”. That is pretty cool but better than that has to be the centrally mounted 11,000rpm tachometer with a bright red face. Last year, McQueen’s 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera was auctioned by Mecum and it fetched more than Dh7million. This customised one-off creation is expected to fetch around (Dh642,000) with proceeds going to the same charity that helped McQueen during his turbulent youth.

So, if you want this no expense spared bespoke Porsche which reflects McQueen’s personality and love for straight line performance, cornering ability and its understated yet cool appearance, you know what to do…
