In the last few years, revived and buoyed by China’s SAIC Motor, British brand MG Motor has been busy launching a raft of new models. Following on the GS, ZS and the 6, MG has launched its new flagship model in the UAE, the RX8. The first seven-seater model from MG, the RX8 is in fact a rebadged version of another SAIC brand Roewe’s SUV that goes by the same model name.

Revealed at the Shaikh Zayed Road showroom of Al Yousuf Motors, MG Motor’s exclusive retail partner in the UAE, the RX8 marks the brand’s entry into an all-important segment in the region. MG claims the RX8 is robust and spacious, and has the largest wheelbase and the roomiest third-row in its class.

“The new MG RX8 is a true challenger model in the compact SUV sector. Not only is it the first ever seven-seater in MG’s 95-year history but it also offers unrivalled levels of space, premium features and in-car technology,” said Mohamed Yousuf, CEO of Al Yousuf Motors. “I am confident that our discerning customers here in the UAE will not find a better package in terms of equipment and value for money in any other seven-seat SUV on the market. Since the beginning of the year we have sold record numbers of MG models - with the introduction of the new RX8, we aim to take our sales to new heights,” he added.

While the exterior features include matrix-style LED lights, 20-inch alloys, and six exterior colour options, the cabin gets premium finishes including wood grain, chrome and soft-touch trim in a choice of three colour schemes. Thanks to its relatively substantial exterior dimensions – 4,923mm long, 1,930mm wide and 1,842mm high – the RX8 has a generous wheelbase of 2,850mm, which in turn translates to a spacious interior.

MG also claims the RX8 is a truly capable 4x4, offering a real-time 4x4 Torque on Demand system with six different driving modes: Auto, 4L, Off-road, Snow, Sport and 2H. The entry level (STD) trim comes with a 4x2 rear wheel drive transmission system. The RX8 is powered by a 220-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that develops maximum torque of 360Nm. It is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox with a paddleshifter.

The MG RX8 is now available across the UAE with a starting price of Dh84,525 excluding VAT, with a six-year or 200,000km warranty as standard.
