The 959, built between 1986 to 1993, is considered one of the greatest cars of all time. And it is easy to see why; with a twin-turbocharged flat-six making 515bhp and catapulting the Porsche to an astonishing top speed of 317kph, it was the world's fastest street-legal production car at the time. It was way ahead of its time too; it was one of the first high-performance cars with all-wheel drive and had a dash that featured gauges displaying the amount of rear differential slip and it had an adjustable suspension. And now is your chance to own the legend.
Mecum is putting a beautiful Komfort trim (this one had a much slower top speed of 314kph…) up for auction during Monterey Car Week and it expects the Guards Red 959 with a Triple Gray interior to fetch in excess of $1.3 million (Dh4.7 million).
Car number 36 of 292 produced has a five-speed manual mated to the 2.8-litre motor and of course the sophisticated all-wheel drive system. The supercar was bought by a German back in October 1987 and he added a McIntosh sound system but other than that, the car is all original and features anti-lock brakes, heated adjustable sport seats, an alarm system and still has the complete tool kit and owner’s manual. That’s not all; it has a full service history with nearly $30,000 (Dh110,000) of invoices. Clearly, this one was much loved by the previous owner.
It might sound like a lot of cash to throw on a car but remember, this isn’t any old car; this is the legendary 959 and prices are set to climb even higher in future. Dh4.7 million might just turn out to be a bargain in a few years from now…
