Remember when Nissan gave the fastest man in the world, Usain Bolt, a GT-R with a gold exterior four years ago? It was gifted to him after his triple gold medal performance at the London Olympic Games in 2012. And now, Nissan is repeating the trick, er, sort of.

This time, it is applying a similar finish to the… Leaf. The all-electric, zero-emissions hatchback will be handed over to Olympic gymnast Max Whitlock for his gold medal on the floor and pommel horse last weekend in Rio. Yeh, it’s a bit meh when compared to what Bolt got. Nissan will be giving him the keys to the fancy-coloured Leaf when he returns to the UK after the Olympic Games. And he’s not the only one either. Nissan says that all athletes from the Nissan Team GB and Paralympics GB teams who won a gold medal will get an identical looking Leaf. Considering the UK has won 16 gold medals, Nissan is going to need quite a lot of gold wrap. We bet they’re hoping they don’t win anymore…

Chris Marsh, marketing director at Nissan Motor (GB), said: “Max has been a Nissan ambassador since we first launched our partnership with Team GB and so many of us at Nissan have had the pleasure of working with him and getting to know him as he prepared for the biggest sporting night of his life. We are all so proud to have him associated with Nissan and he’s the perfect person to be a recipient of one of our gold Leafs.”
