Even though what you are looking at is just an image of a taillight, it belongs to a rather significant model – no not a new Ford Fusion or Kia Optima, although it does look similar. No, this belongs to the all-new 2018 Camry. And from what we can tell from the photo, it doesn’t look too bad. No, we’re not being funny; it seems that there’ll be some nice detail on the newbie which will be revealed at the 2017 Detroit motor show in January.

Now, ‘a nice looking Camry’ might be hard words for some to swallow as the model has never gotten much love for its aesthetics, but if you want hassle free motoring, look no further than this. Or the Honda Accord. Or Nissan Altima. Anyway, back to the taxi, oops we mean Camry, the image shows an LED taillight and a far stronger character line which joins up with the boot opening rather nicely. These two elements alone should help give the eighth generation saloon a lot more presence on the road. But, the most intriguing detail that we can see (rather, can’t see…) is the rear window and boot lid. As you would expect from a teaser image, it’s hard to make out too many details but there seems to be a crease in the C-Pillar and we wonder how this will meld into the boot. Is this a five-door Camry? That’s what the rear end reminds us of (it’s a bit like a Civic hatchback, if you squint…) but we doubt it very much. This will definitely still be a four-door saloon – but don’t go thinking the rear spoiler will be for actual downforce; even though the trim we see here is the XSE and is the ‘sportiest’ one available, it won’t be a mighty street machine. But, we have seen a TRD-tuned version being tested and that one should pack a 3.5-litre V6. The standard model will likely have a 2.5-litre four-pot and a blown 2.0-litre too.

That’s all we have for now – and that it’ll ride on the Toyota New Global Architecture modular platform - but it won’t be long before word on its powertrains and everything else become common knowledge. We might actually look forward to flagging this one down...
