You don’t usually give any SsangYong a second look but you might just be doing that when the carmaker reveals its all-new Rexton this week at the Seoul motor show. It seems to have a bit of the dynamic styling seen in the LIV-2 concept shown at the Paris motor show last year 2016.
It has teased some images of the new third-generation SUV which will serve as the flagship of the brand and it appears, from the dimly lit photos anyway, that the newbie will feature improved styling. That is down to the fact that parent company Mahindra & Mahindra acquired Pininfarina in 2015 and the Italian design house must have had a say in the aesthetics because we like what we see so far. And the interior looks decent too; it might be pretty straight forward but it has a clean, roomy appearance.
For now, all we have are some preliminary technical specifications such as the Rexton’s size which is 4,850mm long, 1,920mm wide, 1,800mm high and a wheelbase that stretches at 2,865mm. It could be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel mated to a seven-speed automatic with front or all-wheel drive while a 2.0-litre petrol with an eight-speed could also make its way to the market. The South Korean automaker says the SUV will have a Quad-Frame body structure using 1.5Gpa giga-steel and that the body will be stronger and lighter than before thanks to the use of advanced high strength steel.
