Remember the Citroën C5 saloon? Well forget it, because now there’s a brand new model albeit with a similar moniker - the C5 Aircross!
Two years ago at the Auto Shanghai in China, Citroën showcased the Aircross concept which looked very cool we must say – and two years later and at the same event the French carmaker is introducing the production version. We’re excited again, not least because it looks pretty good but more so that it will be the most powerful production car by Citroën once it offers the hybrid variant, and it has some pretty decent tech too.
It looks a bit like the C4 Cactus (minus the awful rubber protection pads on the doors – er, they’ve been moved to the lower areas of the body…) but it is bigger than it. The front end features four LED clusters which makes for a rather unconventional look than any other SUV out there, which is what the designers were going for. It also stands out due to the blacked out pillars which create the illusion of a floating roofline. It has red trim on the body and can be optioned with 17, 18 or 19in wheels available in various designs. It rides on PSA’s EMP2 platform and along with the latest-generation petrol engines developing 165 and 200 horses the hybrid will make 300 horses. A petrol engine will work with a pair of electric motors to make the impressive output which in turn will make this the most powerful production car wearing the double chevron logo. That isn’t the only highlight of the SUV – the other is that it will have an all-new suspension with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions which should boost damping quality and ride comfort.
As for the interior it features a digital 12.3in instrument cluster and an 8.0in infotainment system which sits atop a host of touch-sensitive buttons. Now, we’re not sure about these as we’ve seen similar systems and have been less than impressed (ahem, Cadillac’s CUE…) but we wonder whether Citroën has made it more user friendly. Other on-board driver assistance systems will include Speed Sign Recognition and Recommendation, Automatic Dimming Headlights, Active Safety Brake, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop Function, Active Lane Departure Warning System, Active Blind Spot Monitoring System and Vision 360.
