With 285bhp, this TCR is the most powerful Golf GTI yet and although it is just a concept, Volkswagen has stated that it wants “to make this GTI vision come true” by the end of the year. Maybe if we ask nicely enough, they will? Pleaseeee VW! Well, we’ve done our part...
The TCR Concept, which was revealed at the annual Worthersee fan meet in Austria (VW always brings something special to show off here) is a front-wheel drive hatch based on the seventh-generation Golf.
It will be powered by the same engine used in the current GTI and that’s a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder but with an extra pair of radiators for additional cooling capacity. It will produce a maximum torque of 370Nm from 1,600rpm.
The TCR will also feature a mechanical front differential with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox with shift paddles on the steering and get a titanium Akrapovic exhaust system — but with it coming dangerously close to the Golf R’s 290 horsepower output and without the all-wheel drive system bogging it down, it might prove to be quicker than the R and dare we say, better... It’ll be available in an exclusive grey paint with optional black roof, ride on 18in ‘Belvedere’ forged alloys (19in versions will be an option) and get a redesigned front bumper packing a larger splitter along with newly designed air-ducts while below the rear bumper will sit a pretty aggressive looking diffuser.
The cabin will house a new microfibre upholstery design for the sports seats, door inserts, and gear lever cover while the flat-bottomed steering wheel will have a red stripe at the 12 o’clock position to help to reinforce its racing pedigree.
We reckon once this gets the go ahead, it will be produced in limited numbers only since there’s going to be an all-new eighth-gen Golf next year.
