BMW has revealed its first teaser image of the 2-Series Gran Coupe which will be a (belated) rival to the Mercedes CLA and Audi A3. To be revealed in production guise eight months from now at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show in November, we expect a more shadowy teasers from the Munich-based carmaker before the covers finally come off of the compact saloon…

Set to go on sale in global markets by the middle of next year, the four-door coupé will be an entirely new model which will further grow BMW’s ‘Gran Coupe’ range. For now, all we are treated to of the upcoming model - which appears to be finished in a tasty turquoise paint - is its C-pillar, rear fenders, small boot lid spoiler, shark-fin antenna and slim LED taillights. We reckon it’ll be rather sporty, elegant, and extravagant.

It will be available in front-wheel drive and share the same platform as the 1-Series hatch (a plug-in hybrid model is also mooted…) while a range-topping M2 Gran Coupe could also be on the way rumoured to feature all-wheel drive. This one could pack the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder as the X2 M35i and make over 300 horses and 450Nm of torque. It’ll probably feature the same eight-speed automatic too and if it sees the light of day it could give the all-wheel-drive Audi RS3 and Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 something to worry about.

The 2-Series Gran Coupe will be produced alongside the 2 Series Coupé and 2 Series Convertible in Leipzig, Germany.
