Talk about stealing someone else’s thunder! “Hold your horses” read the tweet from Ford accompanied by a blue version of the classic Mustang logo released on the same night as the new Model Y was being revealed by Elon Musk. Does that mean an electric version of the Mustang is on the way? Hmm, seems like the Blue Oval has something pretty big in store for those who are mulling over putting a deposit down for the Tesla…

It’s common knowledge that Ford is preparing to launch its first electric vehicle – the Dearborn carmaker has made it clear that it will be concentrating its efforts a lot more on building EVs in the future – and it appears that their debut model will be an electrified Mustang or at least inspired by the iconic Pony.

Since Ford is targeting the Model Y it’ll likely be a performance crossover vehicle and from what we hear it’ll be able to do over 480km on a single charge. No official name has been given to the upcoming model (Ford initially hinted it’d be called the Mach 1 – and though we would love it to get the classic muscle car moniker it may be called the Model E instead…) but there’s no doubt that making a Mustang-based family hauler will be massive business for Ford as it shifts focus from building saloons and coupes to far more popular SUVs and CUVs.

It should arrive at the same time as Tesla begins to deliver the Model Y, and that is later next year. We can’t wait to find out more about this one!
