This is the Edge ST — the first SUV from Ford Performance — and it promises to be so sporty that it has in fact replaced the Edge Sport in the lineup. You can still get the Trend and Titanium trims but we would go straight for the new performance crossover SUV and here’s why...
It packs a 335 horsepower 2.7-litre twin-turbo Ecoboost motor (it’s the same engine as the outgoing Sport but it has been tuned to make 20 horses more) along with a healthy 515Nm of torque (the Sport had 475) mated to a new quick-shifting eight-speed automatic which should help it to hit 100kph from rest in around six seconds. We expect that the ST-tuned suspension (monotube rear dampers) will aid handling while there will be plenty of grip from the all-wheel drive system. The Sport, which also had AWD, made do with just the six forward gears and it wasn’t as economical as the ST promises to be with Ford claiming 11.2-litres per 100km (the Sport was thirstier at 11.8) and the improvement is likely due to the new transmission’s additional cogs.
Aside from performance, the ST differs over the Sport in aesthetics too (the entire Edge range has gotten a facelift for 2019) and features sportier looking front and rear bumpers, a gloss-black grille, body-coloured side skirts, ST badging throughout and it rides on 21in alloys.
The cabin gets contoured and heavily bolstered sports seats with suede and leather upholstery while the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite has been added (some of its safety features include forward collision warning and dynamic brake support, precollision assist with pedestrian detection, blind-spot indicators with cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping assist, auto high beams and hill-start assist) but the tech highlight has to be a new Sport Mode; push this and you should feel an improvement in the throttle response and it will hold gears near the redline through cornering manoeuvres not to mention open some flaps in the new dual exhaust to give the Ford a more aggressive note. It also has a wireless charging pad, a standard 12-speaker B&O Play Premium Audio System by Harman, Sync with AppLink and an 8.0in infotainment system (Sync 3) and is available now for Dh179,456 inclusive of VAT.
