It would appear that BMW is considering a much larger kidney grille for the next generation 4-Series (M3 and M4) judging by the Concept 4 prototype (making its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt motor show) and we’re not too sure how we feel about it. Yes, it sticks out like a sore thumb if we’re being totally honest but this is just a concept; a more prominent production version could look decent.

If you look past the grille, you’ll note that overall the concept – finished in a Forbidden Red hue - has a nice stance and sporty proportions which hopefully will be carried over as is. The inspiration came from iconic models including the 328 and 3.0 CSi according to BMW, and we like the look of the laser headlights (look closely and you’ll notice they don’t have any glass cover over their three-dimensional LED elements; the taillights get a similar treatment) below which sit massive air openings which should help cool the engine (details of which as of yet remain unknown; we reckon it will be a range of turbocharged inline-four- and six-cylinder motors mated to an eight-speed automatic sending power to the rear or all four wheels). The light-alloy 21in wheels are equally rich in detail and represent a heavily “dished” take on the sporty five-spoke design.

We do hope that by the time the new 4-Series is green lit for production that it retains the overall looks of the concept – with a slightly toned down grille – but since BMW has said the Concept 4 “offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4-series range,” it might not change all that much…
