As we all know, Chevy brought major changes with the all-new C8 Corvette – the biggest being its new mid-engine layout and the fact it is the first one to use a dual-clutch transmission – and now, the gold bowtie has revealed the convertible variant and it packs a new two-piece folding hardtop mechanism similar to that of a Ferrari 458. Yes folks, this is the first hardtop convertible in Corvette history!
Up until now, they all had soft tops but Chevy stresses that the new roof - which operates via six electric motors - does not compromise the C8 in any way because it gets much of its torsional strength from its central tunnel (rumours have it that it only gains 36kg due to the new roof which is pretty low) and we must admit that the iconic sportscar looks gorgeous with the roof deployed.
What’s more, the composite top folds down under a tonneau cover above the engine so the boot isn’t impacted while the hardtop also helps reduce interior noise. But who wouldn’t want to hear that 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 in all its glory? We sure would and so it’s great to see that Chevy has added an electric rear window which can be rolled down to allow that V8’s roar to fill the cabin – without messing up your hairdo too much! But with the roof down and 495 horsepower ready to tear up the tarmac, we guess you’ll definitely have a bad (good) hair day!
It loses the coupe’s glass engine cover which we love but it does get two flying buttresses (they can be painted in the body colour or in black) which also look pretty smooth.
Production will begin towards the end of the first quarter of 2020 and the base 1LT variant should cost roughly Dh250,000, that’s around Dh30,000 more than the coupe.
