Fans of the 2009 hit movie Avatar take note - Mercedes-Benz has just pulled the wraps off of a wild new concept car that was inspired by the flick! And guess what it is called? That's correct, AVTR...

It actually stands for Advanced Vehicle Transformation but Mercedes-Benz even enlisted the assistance of the director of the film, James Cameron, to help design it. No, it isn't quite the sequel he's promised but it features a mix of everything that CES (Consumer Electronics Show) where the car was shown is known for and that includes outlandish styling, far-off future tech, and a tie-in with a major entertainment property. And if that was not bizarre enough, it even has scales on the body!

That's right - the full rear end of the AVTR is covered in 33 discrete scales which the German carmaker calls “bionic flaps”. They say they could be used to communicate with people outside the car. Don't ask us how... The concept also has special spherical wheels which were inspired by the “seeds of the Tree of Souls” from the movie and they can rotate so that the AVTR can move sideways, or even diagonally.

And guess what? It doesn't have a steering wheel! It won't need one as this futuristic car is autonomous. Instead, passengers interact with the car through an oval-shaped controller that accordions up and out of the center console to meet your hand.

The car draws from the movie's key plot points such as the connection between man, machine, and nature and does so with the seats and the controller vibrating along with the pace of your breathing and heart rate... Why? Who knows.

It will feature all sorts of tech while parents will be able to monitor their children from the dashboard screen.
