Remember the XM name? It used to belong to Citroën but it retired the moniker 16 years ago and now, Mitsubishi is bringing it back on a new crossover/MPV concept which will be on display at the 2016 Gaikindo Indonesia International motor show next week.

The seven-seater XM, which reminds us a little of the 2015 eX concept, is being described as Mitsubishi as having the “toughness of an SUV with the versatility of an MPV” thus the XM name - “X” stands for crossover and “M” for MPV so we guess they’re on to something then.

It features Mitsubishi’s new Dynamic Shield front end design; we like the sharp headlights and the large black grille while the flared wheel arches look pretty good too. It also has an eye-catching sculpted character line which gives the profile a strong look and the “floating roof” illusion thanks to the blacked-out D pillar is a nice touch. There aren’t any photos of the rear of the concept or indeed of its interior but with Mitsubishi saying this is a seven-seater we can expect three rows in there, and it should benefit from a flexible seating arrangement like most MPV’s provide.

As for its powertrain, no details have been revealed yet but it could have some of the same hardware as the eX and that could be an all-electric powertrain in an all-wheel drive layout. Mitsubishi did say that the XM will provide 'high all-terrain performance,' so AWD is rather likely.

A production version will be built from October next year at a new plant in Bekasi, West Java.
