It was a case of ‘the usual suspects’ stepping in to the ring to wrestle for the title of Best Premium SUV this year, but with its 32 valve DOHC 5.6-litre V8 good for 560Nm torque and 400hp, the all new Infinti QX80 had no trouble muscling out the opposition and claiming the winner’s trophy.
So confident were Infiniti that their behemoth would prove popular in the Middle East that they chose, for the very first time, to use the Dubai International Motor Show to debut the product to the world. No surprise then that their eight seat, stylish family hauler was a key attraction at the show and proved to be a big hit with the crowds.
On the road the QX80 is surprisingly agile to drive for such a large vehicle and comes complete with an extensive list of driver aids and safety features including smart cruise control which works right down to 1kmh, and a Smart Rear View Mirror. A camera on the tailgate feeds an image of what’s going on behind the car to the rear view mirror when selected, since in a car capable of carrying so many people, the view from a conventional mirror might be obstructed.
Add to that a wide range of four wheel drive modes, automatic torque distribution, a quieter ride and a luxurious interior, and the QX80 looks set to take on all challengers for many years to come.
