If it’s massive trucks that do it for you then you’d have loved the 2019 Chicago motor show as several new pickups were launched at the colossal McCormick Place including the GMC Sierra Heavy Duty, Mopar Ram and Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson to name but a few. In fact, we couldn’t even feature them all (there were that many!) — but there was a comprehensive collection of other major new-model debuts and plenty of mid-life refreshes so without any further ado here’s our top pics from Illinois:
2019 Ram 1500 (See main image)
The new Multifunction Tailgate for the 2019 light-duty 1500 truck should help improve cargo-access for customers. The first-of-its kind 60-40 split and swing-away functionality also retains the capabilities of a fully-dampened, drop-down tailgate with remote release options. The 1500 features new eTorque mild hybrid system on the Pentastar V6 and Hemi V8 while the revised cabin packs a class-exclusive 12in touchscreen.
2020 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty
Chevrolet’s all-new 2020 Silverado HD is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor. The 6.6-litre V8 makes 401 horses and has 22 per cent more torque compared to the previous 6.0-litre V8. The 6.6-litre Duramax turbodiesel V8 produces 445 horses and can tow 35,500 pounds — a whopping 52 per cent increase from before. Yep, it’s bound to get a lot of work done.
2020 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition
We love the bronze 18in BBS wheels, while the grille, headlight and fog light housings and side mirrors receive cool black accents. The cabin packs black leather-trimmed upholstery with bronze contrast stitching. Mechanically it’s the same; the 5.7-litre V8 makes 381 horses and it’s mated to an eight-speed auto with a full-time 4WD system.
2019 Dodge Challenger
Dodge will be brightening up the muscle car class by bringing back the heritage-inspired colour Sublime green. The bright shade will be available on the Charger and Challenger. The Challenger SRT Hellcat returns with output now starting at 717 horses and featuring a new dual-snorkel bonnet. Oh yes!
2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
The big news is that is has got Golf R brakes and a new multi-link rear suspension, too. The sixth gen saloon also packs the heart and soul of the GTI via its 2.0-litre TSI motor which makes 228 horses.
The unique GLI styling includes 18in aluminum-alloy wheels, aggressive front and rear bumpers, black honeycomb grille, rear spoiler, and dual chrome exhaust.
2020 Kia Sportage
It boasts a bold new look, more convenience and available driver-assist features, and a standard 8.0in touchscreen. Exterior changes include new headlights with available LED turn indicators, redesigned projector-beam fog lights, new front grille, bumper, air intake and skid plate, newly designed 17-, 18- and 19in alloy wheels and there’s a new metallic Steel Grey exterior colour. The interior features new available Sofino leatherette seating surfaces, newly designed steering wheel and vent bezels.
2019 Nissan Pathfinder Rock Creek Edition
This one emphasizes the rugged Pathfinder heritage via unique dark 18in inch wheels with 255/60R18 all-season tyres, black mesh grille, black roof rails, black door handles, black front and rear fascia accents and unique badging on the front doors. The interior changes include two-tone seating surfaces and badging. Available in two-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations, it’s equipped with a 284-horsepower 3.5-litre V6.
2019 Lexus NX Black Line
It gets more pizzazz through unique styling and design touches on both the interior and exterior. The latter features Forged Split-six spoke 19in wheels and lower sport body side graphic and larger exhaust openings while the former gets Mark Levinson 14-speaker, 835-watt Premium Surround Sound Audio System, exclusive 10.3in Navigation System multimedia display. 1,000 are to be built.
2020 Alfa Romeo 4C Spider Italia
Just 15 are to be built with each handcrafted in Modena, Italy. Standard features include exclusive Misano Blue Metallic exterior colour, piano black front air intake and rear diffuser, unique livery with dedicated “4C Spider Italia’’ graphics, aluminium dashboard insert with “4C Spider Italia’’ logo and a progressively numbered plate on the centre console.
2020 Subaru Legacy
The new seventh gen Legacy rides on the Subaru Global Platform, has a 2.4-litre turbo flat-four engine making 260 horses and packs standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, and a 11.6in multimedia screen.
2019 Cadillac XT5 Sport Package
This darker theme for its premium crossover gives it a more aggressive appearance. Now infused with darkened exterior styling elements including a gloss black grille with a metallic surround and 20in wheels with a Technical Gray finish, the XT5 is more striking than ever. Power comes from a 310 horsepower 3.6-litre V6 mated to an eight-speed automatic.
2019 Mazda Miata MX-5 30th Anniversary Edition
It was right here at the Chicago motor show back in 1989 when the MX-5 Miata was launched and 30 years later, Mazda is marking the milestone with the 30th Anniversary Edition. Just 3,000 will be built and they’ll feature 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels by Rays and a Racing Orange paint job. Orange trim makes its way into the cabin too and it contrasts well with the black leather seats. Power comes from a 181-horse 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine.
