Shell GoldStar Contest, the road safety initiative by lubricants brand Shell in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Sharjah Police and Ciel Marketing & Events will be held across Dubai and Sharjah for three days starting today (April 8, 2019). As part of the campaign, the Responsible Road Users Award will be given out to drivers, pedestrians as well as cyclists who follow good safety behaviours.

During these days, drivers will be selected by the RTA and Sharjah Police for following road safety practices such as using seatbelts, staying off the phone while driving, lane discipline, using child safety seats, using indicators and observing speed limits. In other categories, use of designated pedestrian crossings and road traffic safety practices to reduce risk associated with cycling will earn favourable attention and reward from the authorities.

Those selected will each receive a cash prize of AED 1,000 and a certificate, with a total of Dh30,000 set to be given away during the three-day campaign, with 10 road users chosen on each day of the campaign.

“We are glad to bring back this initiative and hope that the Shell GoldStar Contest raises awareness around road safety in the UAE to improve and encourage safe practices,” said Ali Al Janabi, Shell Country Chairman for the United Arab Emirates. “Unfortunately, road incidents and fatalities are common occurrences and through initiatives like this, we aim to help reduce them”, he added.

Deema Hussein, Traffic Awareness Senior Manager of the RTA said there is a growing emphasis in ensuring that roads are safe and secure and the RTA strives to have an ongoing communication to educate citizens and residents on this subject. “Our efforts highlight the positive impact that good road safety habits have on our daily lives and we are very supportive of campaigns that take our message forward. Efforts such as the Shell GoldStar Contest reaches out to the whole pyramid of road users and creates the right environment to ensure that we are heading in the right direction of safer roads with value addition to lives and property,” said Hussein.
