Nothing feels better than seeing all those presents under the Christmas tree, knowing what they are, and counting down the hours before you can open them! It’s even better when you have taken delivery of a brand new 2020 Ford Mustang GT500. Powered by a brutal 5.2-litre supercharged V8 making 760 horsepower and 847Nm of torque.
Now, who wouldn’t want to get in and put their foot down and hit 100kph in just 3 and bit seconds? Two buyers in the US were expecting the cars to be delivered to them in time for Christmas and they would have made excellent presents… Well, sadly, that gleeful feeling of anticipation went to total despair as the truck carrying the muscle cars crashed in Detroit. It caused the trailer transporting the cars to flip over and they suffered serious damage… Oh dear.
Now, damaging a brand new car is heartbreaking - but when it is a pair of custom Shelby GT500s well, that is a whole new level of disaster.
The Ford F-350 towing the trailer carrying the two Mustangs jackknifed while travelling down the Fisher Freeway and the driver was unable to control the pickup. It ended up flipping over and sent the cars – one painted Iconic Silver and the other Grabber Lime with an adjustable exposed carbon fiber GT4 track wing – smashing onto the road. Both cars hit the pavement on the passenger’s side and authorities suspect excessive speed along with an improperly balanced load to have caused the crash.
It was earlier believed that one of the cars was going to a Ford family member, possibly a great-grandchild of Henry Ford himself, but the automaker denied this.
So, Christmas was ruined for the two enthusiasts and we reckon the only place these two iconic cars will be going now is not happy new homes but the salvage auction instead. What a waste. Let's have a moment of silence for the Ponies please…
