The McLaren 650S is still relatively new, having been launched just a couple of years ago. But a successor is already under development, as these latest spy shots show. The prototype spied testing will be the first of 15 new models that McLaren plans to introduce by the year 2022, as part of its ambitious Track 22 plan.

Codenamed P14, the 650S replacement is seen wearing some heavy cladding all over, however, the overall design is expected to be much sharper than that of the car it replaces. The headlights and taillights are likely to be very different in styling from that of the current McLaren model, and will incorporate full LED technology.

Interestingly, no openings have been provided in the cladding along the car’s sides, suggesting the prominent side air intakes that were a characteristic feature of the 650S could be missing in the new model. The P14 is also expected to be built on McLaren’s current carbon fibre tub with a few tweaks, and powered by the same twin-turbocharged V8 block from the outgoing car, albeit with some substantial performance improvements.
