The current generation XC60 impressed us so much when it was launched here that it was chosen as the best crossover in our first Car of the Year awards. But that was way back in 2009, and naturally the XC60 has grown long in the tooth. However, a replacement is in the works, as evidenced by the first spy shots we published a couple of months ago. This week, we have a new set of shots of the crossover being tested in the snow in Sweden.

Although it still wears some heavy cladding, you can see that it takes styling inspiration from its larger sibling, the XC90, which incidentally was our Car of the Year last year. So, it’s great to see that the same ‘Thor’s hammer’ headlights and the vertically oriented ‘waterfall’ taillights find their way into the next-gen XC60. It will also be built on the same scalable platform that underpins the XC90 and the S90 saloon.

Although our snapper hasn’t managed to get photos of the interior, we’re sure the similarities to the larger vehicles will be seen there too. The powertrain line-up is likely to include force-fed four-cylinder engines in different tunes along with a range-topping Twin Engine plug-in hybrid variant.
