It’s often tricky enough deciphering all of the various AMG GT models that the good folk at Mercedes have on offer and things are about to get that much harder judging by these latest spy shots that our snapper flooded our inbox with.

As a reminder, as of now you can get a GT Coupe and Roadster, GT C Coupe and Roadster (the latter is the hottest drop-top version in the range), GT S Coupe, and GT R Coupe. Joining that lot is this, the AMG GT R Roadster which was spotted lapping the Nürburgring in anger and it will take the mantle from the GT C Roadster. Talk about doing your utmost to expand your lineup; Merc positions the GT against the 911 and just like the Porsche it is clearly keen on building as many different variants as possible (we’re super excited about the rumoured GT R Black Series, it’ll be for those who have an insane thirst for performance and could be with us by 2020).

Anyway, the newbie may look rather like the GT R Coupe but the giveaway is the, yep, you guessed it — the convertible top. It’s a three-layered automated soft-top that is supported by a lightweight structure combining aluminium, magnesium and steel. It also has a fixed rear wing (remember, the Coupe has a retractable wing) but the rest of this Merc looks much like the others — and that means it’s pretty awesome, even with that zebra print hiding most of the details. We know that it’ll pack the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 that does the bizz in the GT R Coupe and which makes 577 horses and 700Nm of torque (the Coupe can hit 100kph from rest in just 3.6 seconds) and we expect the Roadster to have at least the same output and hit the ton in about the same time. We expect the GT R Roadster to go on sale sometime in 2019.
