There was an inquisitive look on everyone’s face when Mazda first talked of its Kodo — Soul of Motion design language back in 2011. What the heck was that? All was revealed when images dropped of the Shinari concept penned with the new philosophy. It took our breath away. The first production model to receive the new styling treatment was the CX-5 and keen readers will be quick to point out that it was awarded as our Best Crossover in 2014 and once again in our 2018 Car of the Year awards.
Now, we’ve got hold of the second generation CUV for a longer period of time (six weeks to be precise) so that we can stare into its beautiful LED eyes... Once we’re done lusting after the AWD family hauler, we’ll be keen to remind ourselves at just how good it is to drive (we’ve mentioned several times that its pièce de résistance is its fabulous chassis which combines a precise steering with refined road manners), and we’ll be putting its practicality to the test and last but not least we will be keeping an eye for any niggles or issues that may crop up while it’s here at wheels HQ.
Not that we envision there will be any for the redesign last year saw improvements made to the ride quality while more attention was paid to upscaling the cabin and it got some new safety and technology features too. All of this helped us conclude that it is the best small CUV out there at the moment — and we’re sticking by that.
Sure, there are plenty of options in this segment ranging from the likes of the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape and Nissan X-Trail and if you believe the marketing hyperbole they’re all sporty, comfortable and practical...
The CX-5 packs a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated motor that produces 188bhp and 251Nm of torque. The four-cylinder is mated to a six-speed automatic which is smooth and sharp in its shifts and apart for the peppy drivetrain and sound chassis, it’s the sheer amount of tech features in there that’ll leave you wide eyed. You get it all from a head-up display, remote controlled power liftgate with user-defined height adjustment, Smart Brake Support, Driver Attention Alert, Smart City Brake Support, Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go function, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Blind Spot Monitoring, lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure warning among others.
Goodness me, picking faults with it is going to be hard, but, we’ll be damned if we can’t find at least one! More next week.
