It is often said that things won’t make you happy. I agree with this notion, or at least I did up until last week when I picked up this brand new pickup. I haven’t stopped smiling since. Call me materialistic, I don’t care.
I’m not sure what I love most right now about this 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie; is it it’s handsome looks, massive cabin or all the wizbangery that it’s packing? It’s probably the 5.7-litre V8. Anyway, there’s time to decide as we’ve bagged the truck for a month at least (a call to FCA may be needed to extend our time with it...) and we’ll be updating you with weekly reports that range from its practicality (we already know that it won’t fit in most mall car parks which is great news — we hate malls) performance (who could resist tackling the beaten path with a Hemi?) and comfort, space and tech (it has buckets of all three). They’re billing this as the most luxurious truck in its class. I think they’re right.
Ever since separating from Dodge and launching as a stand-alone division in 2010, the Ram brand has been able to create a distinct identity for itself and has emerged as a key player in its segment. Five years ago, the 1500 was updated and some of the goodies that it received then was an eight-speed auto. This was big news but GM and Ford didn’t sit around twiddling their thumbs; in fact the competition has leapfrogged Ram in terms of gear count — those two have 10-speed gearboxes now while the 1500 still only has eight. Though it’s been redesigned for 2019 it retains the Hemi of its predecessor. Are they enough cogs? Is that enough motor? Will I ever stop asking questions? Check back next week!
