Back in 2012, it was the CX-5 that introduced the ‘Kodo - Soul of Motion’ design concept into a production Mazda. The styling language, first previewed by the 2010 Shinari concept, subsequently found its way into every car in the Japanese manufacturer’s model range. It was also the first model to feature the brand’s Skyactiv technology. This week, at the 2017 Dubai International Motor Show, Mazda is launching the fully redesigned CX-5 for the Middle East market.
Boasting further refinement to its design and technology, the new CX-5 promises to provide new dimensions of driving pleasure. In fact, Mazda has positioned it as “an SUV all customers will enjoy.” The carmaker asserts that the new CX-5 will be a car that everyone on board will enjoy, not just the driver.
As with every other new generation Mazda, a lot of emphasis has been placed on the CX-5’s design as well. An evolution of the ‘Kodo - Soul of Motion’ design theme, the exterior is both bold and sensual, the beauty of which is now highlighted even further by the newly developed Soul Red Crystal exterior paint finish.
The cabin has also received an evolutionary design upgrade, which focuses on enhanced comfort for the driver and passengers. Changes to the ‘human-centred’ interior include a head-up active driving display on the windshield, revised seats front and back, with rear passengers getting their own AC vents and two USB ports to charge their devices. Cabin insulation has been improved too, affording considerably easier conversation among occupants than before. Based on customer feedback, Mazda has also included a power liftgate with user-defined height adjustment feature.
Driving dynamics have also been given a thorough upgrade with the ‘Jinba Ittai’ spirit permeating everything from the Skyactiv body, chassis and drivetrain. The new Skyactiv body has 15 per cent more torsional rigidity than before, adding to the already high levels of collision safety. Add to this more advanced steering, suspension and brake systems, the new CX-5 offers extremely nimble handling and impressive performance. The only engine on offer here is the Skyactiv 2.5 litre four cylinder, which offers great performance with better fuel economy.
It also comes packed to the brim with cutting edge features such as Smart Brake Support, Driver Attention Alert, Smart City Brake Support, Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go function, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Blind Spot Monitoring, lane Keeping Assist and Lane Departure warning among others. All these features add up to strong safety credentials. In fact, the new CX-5 has been awarded a 5-star rating by Euro NCAP agency, with a 95 per cent rating for adult occupants, 80 per cent for child occupants, and 78 per cent for pedestrians.
